Other than the Bedouin desert camps and the dhow cruise, there are more ways to indulge yourself in the rich culture of Dubai. While you are on a dhow, you will float by a place called ‘Bastakia’ on the Bur side of the Dubai creek. At Bastakia there are many art galleries and a couple of pleasant hotels too with little less
generous doorways that tall people usually bump their heads into. Bastakia is home to several well-known buildings. One of them is the Al Fahidi Fort – the oldest architectural building in Dubai.
The Al Fahidi Fort was built with the aim of defending Dubai in case of attacks from the sea. The Fort was converted into a renowned museum famed as the ‘Dubai Museum’. It displays a rich collection of objects showcasing the way of life of the inhabitants of the past.
During the winter months, an open-air souk is held in Bastakia on Saturdays where about 50 stalls sell arts, crafts, fashion items, antiques, food and drinks. Here, musical programmes are also performed for your merriment.
